NUUT 2 NP-602 is an average eReader, hobbled as its WiFi function is disabled for models outside South Korea. The NUUT 2 NP-602 uses a 6-inch e-ink display similar to those used in Western eReaders, and has a standard array of features.
It has an unusual white design and the actual screen take up surprisingly little real estate on the unit, which seems bigger to us than it needs to be. When many eReaders weigh 6 ounces or so, the NUUT 2 weighs 10; while most readers are .3 or .4 inches thick, the NUUT 2 is .75 inches.
It has speakers and headphones. The NUUT 2 only supports 9 file types, which is on the low side for a modern eReader. However, we do like the file structure, breaking down into directories "books," "music," and "pictures." Of course, with only 8 greyscales compared to the 16 on leading eReaders, any pictures won't look their best.
The NUUT 2 uses a lithium ion battery good for some 7,000 page turns (perhaps 2 weeks of heavy reading), which is good by current standards. There is a separate power indicator bar, an unnecessary waste of device real estate in our opinion. It comes with an adequate 1GB of internal memory, but this can be augmented up to 16 GB with SD cards.
The NUUT NP-601 is produced by the Neolux Corporation, South Korea. Unlike the previous NUUT 1, which was a Netronix EB-100 variant, this model was designed inhouse, a first effort which may explain the unit's bulkiness. The NUUT 2 is available in South Korea, and in September 2009 was introduced to the European Union, specifically Sweden.
Connecting: The NUUT 2 connects via USB cable to a PC to download content. Oddly, it has WiFi capabilities in its home market of South Korea, but this is disabled in export versions, so we can't really recommend it outside of South Korea. Within the country, it can support functions like automatically downloading your morning newspapers, but without this feature, the international version gets lost in the crowd of average eReaders.
Accessories: You can buy a leather cover for the NUUT for 299 kr (€29 or $41).
Price: The NUUT 2 EU version, currently retailing only from Sweden, costs 2699 kroner (~€260, or $375)
